About Jess Growden

Jess Growden is a veteran of the theatre, beer salesman by day, and a Master's Candidate by night. Her favorite things include unfinished cups of raspberry tea, naps face-down in the spines of good books, and rescue missions to liberate half-dead plants from the sale racks at local hardware stores. Her goal in life is to become a trophy wife (ironically, of course), so that she may devote her full-time efforts towards experiments in the kitchen, nursing those dead violets back to life, and writing books. Currently, she resides in Pennsylvania with her boyfriend, who not only supports and encourages her writing habits, but also enjoys her tendency towards severely non-politically-correct moments. They have a betta, Krieger, who just might be the stupidest fish that ever lived.

Former disciples of Sesame Street, prepare to be traumatized!  Avenue Q at Cumberland Theatre is a shockingly funny satire of the realities young adults face when they grow up to realize they’re not as special as their parents told them.  Real life hits hard and most of us aren’t prepared for it.  Avenue Q takes [...]

Today, they would be called terrorists.  Then, in the 1860s, they were called heroes.  McNeill’s Rangers, a production by Potomac State College and in association with Apple Alley Players, chronicles the bravery and passion of a partisan Confederate battalion functioning in the foothills of West Virginia.  Due to the nature of the unit, they did [...]

Beau Jest, written by James Sherman and playing at Cumberland Theatre, is the tale of one woman’s absurd attempt to please her overbearing, but well-meaning, family – a story to which many women can relate.  Sarah, a pretty teacher, is dating a man her Jewish parents won’t approve of: handsome, kind – and a gentile.  [...]

Can I Really Date a Guy Who Wears a Yarmulke? opened on Friday night to a nearly full house – a huge success for the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia, who was hosting their first theatre production since 2004.  The show features a young Jewish woman, newly arrived home from a propaganda-filled birthright trip [...]

Theatre Review: ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ at Front & Centre Stage Productions

34thstreet

Miracle on 34th Street opened to a full house on Saturday evening.  A line had formed outside of the building and extra seating was being arranged in the balcony.  This all proved to be a good omen, as Front and Centre Stage Productions later put on one of the stronger shows of its history.  Opening [...]

Theatre Review: Robinwood Players Presents ‘Noises Off’ at Hagerstown Community College

Hagerstown Community College Production

Veterans of the theatre know that the antics backstage are often more entertaining that the show occurring onstage.  Such is the case with Noises Off at Hagerstown Community College’s Robinwood Players.   Set as a show within a show, audiences are exposed to the grittier truth behind live performance, where emotions spiral out of control, tensions [...]

39steps1

If you are looking for a good melodrama, look no further than the Cumberland Theatre’s The 39 Steps.  This show offers a little bit of romance, a little bit of adventure, and a lot of laughs.  A relatively new script (2005), The 39 Steps parodies the novel by John Buchan and the film by Alfred [...]

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum presented by Front & Centre Stage Productions, opened strong on Saturday evening at the Cumberland Theatre to a nearly full house.  A decorative, yet functional set of ivy and Roman architecture provided the backdrop to what proved to be a high-energy evening of madcap chase scenes, [...]
